Write a blog about the importance of having a museum that focuses on slavery and the point of view of slaves. What are some important elements you think would be important to include when building a museum about slavery? Do you feel it is important for visitors to "walk in the shoes" of some of these slaves, to understand their experience? Please answer all questions in this prompt.
The Whitney Plantation Museum
I think that it is important to have a museum that focuses on slavery because it was a bad thing, but at the same time, a big mistake that we should learn from. It would be a good idea when building a slavery museum to keep the origin al buildings and sleeping quarters of the slaves compared to the plantation owners. It would also be important to show the punishments and jobs of the slaves in that time.
ReplyDeleteI do think it is important to walk in the shoes of slaves because if we don’t realize how hard it was back then, we’ll always be ungrateful and complain about how bad it is for us, when it was even more horrible for them. If slaves came into the present, they’ll be disappointed at the kids today that complain about not getting what they want for their birthday, even though their parents still spent hundreds of dollars for the gift. Slaves didn’t even get any gifts ever even on special occasions.
I think the importance of the museum is to show how it was to be a slave. I think that they should include a place that says what the slaves would sell for. They should show what the slave quarter looked like.
ReplyDeleteI think it is very important for visitors to walk in the shoes of the slaves. I would like to see what the slaves schedule was like. I think they should show what the kids did too. I wonder if the kids ever got to play. Did they ever get a day off?
ReplyDeleteI think that having a museum dedicated to slavery is very important. It would be cool being able to experience what all of the slaves felt for many years and seeing what it was like at that time. The museum to me is probably very informational and says a lot more about the slave’s history than anywhere else. I think it would probably be fun to go to the museum but I don’t think I will ever end up going there.
I feel like it is very important to know what the slaves felt and how they dealt with the poor treatment from their owners. I think it is sad to see the things in the museum that remind us of the horrible past that the slaves had to live in. The video really helped me see how cruel the slave owners could be by saying, if you were caught using pen and paper you would be whipped 25 times! It would be sad to visit the museum but it would also be very educational.
I think some important elements could be the meaning of the museum and why the museum is being built. Normally when you make museum you make it to show people the history of whatever the museum is about. So this museum is basically to remember what slavery was like and feel empathize for the people that had to go through slavery.

I think the important elements of the museum would be, to put an exhibit of the whole bidding process to get a slave because it was a big deal to buy one. They should also include a list of the common the punishment they would get because they would get in trouble a lot. I think they should also include a model of a plantation and the rooms of the slaves because it would be interesting to know what their rooms looked like. They should also have personal items of a slave to give a good understanding for people who visit.

The video showed how they would do their job and how slaves would be sold. Some slaves would be treated terribly like animals but other slaves would be treated like normal people.

ReplyDeleteSome of the important elements that are needed in a museum about slaves are that it shows rules they had to follow and the things they had to do in order to stay out of trouble. It should also simulate a mental picture as if you were a slave and you were seeing what they saw. Lastly, I think it should include a list of chores that the slaves had. I think it’s important for visitors of the museum to be able to “walk in the slaves shoes” because, most people don’t exactly understand how tough it was and what it took to be a slave back then.
While watching the video about the Whitney Plantation Museum I felt like I really got a deeper understanding of what it is like to be a slave and how it would feel. I personally think it is so important to have a slave museum to explain the culture of the African slaves for many reasons. My first reason is that people need to know about this rich part of history and get to feel the sadness and the tough life that these innocent people who look different than us, but are really the same underneath had to go through. All of the sad memories are devastating but people need to realize if it weren’t for some people we would be still living in that cruel time. The slaves get whipped numerous times if they are caught with a pencil and paper, they live in stalls like horses do, they sleep on rough hay, they can’t eat the plantation owner’s food, and so much more.
ReplyDeleteWhen you want to build a museum of the history there are many elements you need to add such as where they lived what their quarters looked like, a schedule of what their day looked like, what close they wore, what they did when they didn’t work like activities or games, what they left behind when they were freed, and so much more. You need for people of all races and ages to be able to experience the life that people had to unfortunately live. It is important for visitors to feel like a slave to really grasp the meaning of the plantation and the African culture that they brought with them. I think when you finally realize what happened you will get a whole new view on the world and how people are living today in 2016. I really hope people take in what is around them if they visit the museum. I know one day I will definitely visit it and take in the culture.

DeleteWhen building a museum especially about slavery there should be many things that may relate to their lives. For example some children were born and raised up in slavery, which means they had no education or a toy even at the youngest of age. Too add on to that there should be statues of children in the field picking cotton until dusk. Even worse the adults picked cotton from 7am to 10pm. The real focus should be on the people who stopped slavery. I am glad that the age of the slaves is over.
ReplyDeleteYes I do, it is important for people to feel what is like to be a slave. To feel the grim and lonely life of a slave. To imagine working from dawn to dusk, picking cotton. Sadly even children had to pick cotton from the age of 3 to 103. Thankfully now we are all equals.

DeleteI think a museum to remember all the slaves is important because they had to do so much work and were not allowed any freedom what so ever. Children slaves should have spent their days going to school, playing with friends, and being free to do anything they want. Adult slaves should have gone to work, come home to play with their children, and be free as well. If I was in a slave’s shoes I would find a way to escape without anyone noticing and show all the other slaves the way out.
ReplyDeleteIf I made a slave museum some elements I would include would be the bell that they rang in the morning, food that slaves made for their masters, sculptures of the slaves working, and there rooms. I think it is very important to take time to learn and discuss slavery so we can know are American history.
I think that it is important to have this museum mostly because people need to know what they’ve done or they need to know there heritage. It’s extremely impressive to see that this man has spent 8 million dollars for people to know this and I think it’s great. This museum helps people not only learn from others mistakes but helps people realize what it was to live and be in the 17th to 18th century.

I think it is important to understand this experience mostly because you have to know how to correct it in the future and stop racial discrimination for good. The Whitney museum shouldn’t be the only slavery museum but it helps us understand who our ancestors are and that’s important.
Some elements that should be at the museum would be what their sleeping and living conditions and where they were located. I think there should a diorama of the slaves working and a wall with all of the names of the slaves that worked on the plantation. Another important element would be all of their jobs and their schedules. They should have all of their punishments on a list and why they would get them as the video says if your boss caught you with paper and a pencil you would get whipped twelve times, when I heard that it surprised me how cruel the punishments were.

I think it would also show how far we have come to make sure that there is never slavery again.

DeleteI think that to build a museum that revolves around slavery is a good idea. You would have to include a display of slaves working and you would have to have a wall of pictures of slaves. It should have a replica of what the slave’s working and sleeping quarters looked like. There should be a list of chores that the slaves had to do, and maybe have a list of common punishments for slaves. I think that the Whitney Museum is very interesting. I think that if you went in wanting to learn about slavery, you would come out knowing a lot more about it. I could tell from the video that the founder of the museum really thought that the era of slavery was a very appalling time in American history. It was also clear that he really wanted to get the message of how horrifying slavery was, through to his audience.

I think that only then would we be able to realize how terrible life was for them. In the video of the Whitney Museum, it said that the slave owners would put runaway slaves in animal pens and treat them like animals. To even consider that is completely horrifying and disturbing to me. I think that the Whitney Museum is very unique and there is no other like it. I feel that the museums subject is very important for people to learn about.
The importance of having a museum that focuses on slavery is that some people need more than just learning about it in school. They can experience it to learn more. It is important for kids to learn the history. Maybe they don’t even know how big of an impact slavery had in history. If some kids read about it, it might not be enough, but if they experience it, they might learn and remember more. Kids and adults should know about slavery and if they don’t learn they should experience it at the Whitney Plantation Museum.

ReplyDeleteYes, because they need to see how they live with their own eyes instead of just read about it. In a book the author make you see it as he sees it instead of how you see it. If you read a book about slavery and don’t see it in your head what does a book do? Do you still read a book over seeing it yourself?
Some important elements in a museum of slavery are: The places where the slaves worked, ate, slept ect. There should also be stories about different slaves and their life as a slave. There should be artifacts and pictures of what the slaves ate and what they did in their free time. Pictures of them working, old samples of clothes, their daily schedules, the books they read, weapons the owners used, and other stuff they did that/had.

Being a slave was like living in a whole other world! Everything had to be special, and not in a good way sadly.

I think would be important to include when building a museum about slavery is making sure the visitors understand the pain and suffering all the slaves had to face. Important elements for a museum like that should have sculptures of people who helped stop slavery and pictures of where slaves worked (farms, kitchens, and other places). Also, paintings of where they stayed would be interesting. The clothes they wore would also be cool.

There is a lot to learn about slaves and their life. Even the children had to work instead of getting an education, making friends, and playing. so it is good to learn more about slaves.
